Sweetwater Travel pioneered Taimen fishing in Mongolia. After nearly 30 years, and hundreds of happy fishermen, Mongolia remains one of our favorite fly fishing destinations in the world. Sweetwater has refined its operation and offers unrivaled expertise and comfort for the fly fisherman. After all if you are traveling all the way to Mongolia to fish, why wouldn’t you fish with the only group of guides who have been in Mongolia every year since 1995?  In our 28 years in Mongolia, we have broken just about every world record for Taimen on a fly rod.  Simply put, there is no other place in Mongolia where you have a better chance to catch, and release, the fish of a lifetime.

The Fishing

Clients will fish two to a boat.  Our guide staff at the camps consist of highly experienced guides, who are professionals and well respected in the fly fishing world. They are very personable and will do everything possible to make your fishing vacation in Mongolia a memorable one.   During the week, you will fish for impossibly large Taimen and the Asian trout - the Lenok with dry flies.  This past season was a really great one, and we are expecting 2024 to be a great season.

Accommodations

Fishermen will stay in traditional Mongolian gers which are felt tents wrapped around a collapsible wooden frame.  They are 9 feet high and 18 feet in diameter, much larger than standard wall tents, and are equipped with framed full-length single beds, ample room for storing gear, and an area to sit down & relax by a wood stove. Each Ger accommodates 2 fishermen.

Rates

$7,300 per angler and $800 for the charter.  (Total package price: $8,100), which includes lodging based on double occupancy, beer, wine, in-country transfers, and hotel lodging the night before departure to camp and the night after returning from camp at Ulaanbaatar Hotel.  Transportation to camp from UB is done by helicopter or fixed wing aircraft.  A fishing license is also required at $450 per person.

Gear

We recommend 3, 4, or 5 weight for lenok (bring floating line only).  8, 9, or 10 weight for taimen, bring floating, sink-tip and sinking lines (t – 200, t – 300).  Guides will have all the leader and tippet that you will need for fishing.

Why Mongolia Taimen Camps

For most, just the opportunity to experience a pristine landscape, undeveloped river valleys lined with healthy forests or a pair of Mongolian riders driving their stock through a river meadow on a crisp fall morning is enough. But for the fly fishermen, Mongolia makes a great trip even better; it is home to the world’s largest trout that will attack your skated dry flies.  In fact our largest taimen yet, a 60 inch fish, was taken on a mouse pattern in a particularly narrow stretch of river.
