Great Bear Heli Skiing

In 2019, after close to 60 years of operating the Lower Dean River Lodge, we expanded our focus from guiding anglers on the wild steelhead and salmon runs of the mighty Dean River, to the mountains and glaciers far above. After several years of preparation and planning, we are incredibly excited to bring this long-held dream to fruition and are proud to launch into another season filled with powder and ridiculous.

We’ve assembled something of a dream team comprised of industry professionals, friends and family to breathe life into this bold and exciting project. Our guides, pilots, lodge staff & management team bring with them decades of experience and a personal commitment to excellence in all aspects of the guest experience. You’ll see all the faces below at the lodge next winter, plus a number of others - hand-picked to help make your time with us nothing short of spectacular.

The Skiing

We are ideally situated on the interior side of the Central Coast Mountain range, where we ride the divide between East and West. When the weather is fine, we head west into the snow zone ~ big glaciers, big alpine, big mountain snowpacks; when the coastal weather is doing it’s thing, we head east into the cooler and relatively dryer side of the Chilcotin Plateau, where naturally treed glades and burnt forests allow for amazing poor weather powder skiing within a 3-minute flight from the lodge.

Accommodations

The guest cabins are constructed with the same care and attention to detail as the lodge with cedar, fir and stone - complete with heated bathroom floor tiles, a cozy sitting area facing the river, wool carpets, bottomless down duvets, plump pillows and a cheerful cast iron heater. On  this trip expect five star lodging, service and cuisine. Nothing beats the Dean for comfort in some of the most pristine wilderness that British Columbia has to offer.

Why Great Bear?

We are lucky enough to be graced with some of the deepest snowpacks in Canada - averaging a total snowfall of 20 - 30 meters (65 - 100 ft) per year and just 8 skiers a week. No heliski operation has more flexibility or the ability to cater to private groups. In short, if you can dream the adventure within our tenure, and it meets our rigorous safety standards, we will deliver. On top of the best skiing terrain in BC, our lodge is next level when it comes to comfort, cuisine and friendly caring staff. Try us and you'll understand why our repeat booking rate at the Lower Dean River Lodge is literally 100 percent. Those that come, don't stop  coming.
